News article |

At the first joint webinar on ‘Data and information management and sharing in the Decade: why, who, what and how?’ co-organised by the Decade Coordination Office for Ocean Data Sharing (DCO-ODS) and IODE on 31 January, Vicente Fernandez, EMODnet Secretariat, highlighted EMODnet as an important regional node contributing to ocean data sharing and interoperability to the global ocean data ecosystem and its contribution together with Copernicus Marine Service, to the establishment of the public infrastructure backbone for the European digital representation of the Ocean.

EMODnet was present, as a Decade Implementing Partner, at the first on ‘Data and information management and sharing in the Decade: why, who, what and how?’ co-organised by the Decade Coordination Office for Ocean Data Sharing (DCO-ODS), together with IODE, on 31 January.

The DCO-ODS webinar highlighted existing resources for data sharing and management while promoting stakeholder engagement in providing feedback on their data (management) needs. It also shed light on the development of related Decade efforts, including Decade Challenge 8 (Creating a Digital Representation of the Ocean) and the Decade’s Data and Information Strategy.

As primary attachment actions to the DCO-ODS, three Decade Implementing Partners, EMODnet, EurOcean and the National Marine Data and Information Service of China (NMDIS), were invited to participate in a roundtable to reflect on their role and support for the Data and Information Strategy Implementation and contributions aligned with ocean data sharing initiatives. Vicente Fernandez, from the EMODnet Secretariat, highlighted EMODnet as an important regional node contributing to ocean data sharing and interoperability to the global ocean data ecosystem (Ocean Data and Information System (ODIS) and Ocean Infohub (OIH)) and its contribution, together with Copernicus Marine Service, to the establishment of the public infrastructure for the European digital representation of the Ocean (EU Digital Twin Ocean). The EMODnet network and its partners have the capability to effectively disseminate the message of the DCO-ODS to the European experts, while the DCO-ODS can serve as a vital link to the global data community, which helps facilitate collaboration and contribute to filling existing gaps in geographical data availability.
